Jimmy Kimmel is an American comedian, TV host, writer, and producer. He is well-known for his late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! Jimmy has worked in and has voiced over many movies.
He hosted the Academy Awards in 2017 and 18. Kimmel also hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2012, 16, and 20.
As Kimmel started his acting and TV career, he became busier with each passing day. And with the passage of time, Jimmy, who was already a food lover, lost track of his health. And as you can predict, he gained a lot of weight.
Kimmel’s health took a big turn when Dr. Oz came as a host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He advised Jimmy to look after his health as he gained weight quickly. Talking about this, Jimmy said, “The next day he (Dr. Oz) called me and said, ‘I’m worried about you. You’re a young man. You have to take care of yourself.’”
He added, “I was like, ‘You know what? Dr. Oz shouldn’t care more about my health more than I do.’” And from that day onwards, Jimmy started caring about his health. He transformed his lifestyle and successfully lost 25 pounds within months.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Weight Loss Journey
After Dr. Oz came on Jimmy’s show as a host in 2010, he started his weight loss journey. Although Jimmy’s busy professional life was a factor in worsening his health, it wasn’t the whole truth. Kimmel had always been a food lover and didn’t mostly keep track of what he ate.
“I grew up skinny. My first driver’s license had me listed at 6-foot-1 and 136 pounds. So, for a long time, I had it in my mind that I was skinny,” Kimmel told Men’s Journal. “But I also have an Italian mother, who constantly brought more and more food on the table.” [1]
So, after being oblivious about his weight and hearing Dr. Oz’s advice, Kimmel finally bought a scale and weighed himself. “I weighed 208,” Jimmy said. “When you see that number, it makes you look at yourself differently.”
How did Jimmy Lose Weight?
As already mentioned, Jimmy lost weight by transforming his diet. In fact, he transformed his daily routine completely. He gave up eating Italian food for two months and substituted it with a more healthy diet.
Kimmel also hit the gym after a long time, where he did all kinds of workouts. Jimmy’s weight loss credit goes to the 5:2 diet.
Jimmy’s 5:2 Diet Plan
The 5:2 diet is a diet plan that is new as compared to old-school dieting but has been praised by many celebrities like Beyonce and Benedict Cumberbatch. It is a simple diet and a form of intermittent fasting.
By following the 5:2 diet, Jimmy ate five days a week whatever he liked, and on two days, he only consumed food that consisted of less than 500 calories. Although the diet focuses only on 2 days a week, Kimmel also consumed less amount of calories on the other five days.
“I started drastically, as I do with everything. With diet and exercise, there’s no dipping my toe in the water. I’m all the way in,” Jimmy talked about his diet, “Then I’m all the way out. I decided I was going to have two protein shakes and a very small dinner every day. I did that for eight weeks, then I switched to a strict 2,000-calorie-a-day diet.”
Kimmel added, “My new thing is starving myself two days a week. People call it the 5:2 diet, but I’ve been doing it since before it had a name. On Monday and Thursday, I eat fewer than 500 calories a day, then I eat like a pig for the other five days.”
Jimmy said that the trick is to “surprise” the body. The late-night show host admitted that fasting has made him somewhat irritable. Kimmel said that on fasting days he’s not a pleasant person to be around. But on the other days, Jimmy is like funny Jimmy Kimmel.
Jimmy’s Workout Plan
As much as Jimmy loves following a healthy diet plan, he isn’t much excited about exercising. “I just hate it,” Jimmy said about working out. “The only physical activity I enjoy is masturbating. I do have a treadmill desk in my office, and for a while, I would walk on it while checking email and going through jokes.”
Although Jimmy isn’t a big fan of working out, it doesn’t change the fact that exercising is as essential for losing weight as maintaining a healthy diet. Kimmel made it even by focusing more on his diet.
Before & After Weight Loss
Before Jimmy met Dr. Oz and began his journey to lose weight, he carried a weight of roughly 208 pounds. However, with determination and hard work, he managed to shed 25 pounds, and now Jimmy weighs a healthier 183 pounds.
Is the 5:2 Diet Safe though?
Well, as far as following the 5:2 Diet is concerned, there are mixed opinions among experts.
Although the 5:2 diet is quite popular among many celebrities, there are exceptions to following it. Nutritionists and dietitians advise not to follow the 5:2 diet if you are struggling with illness or have some serious health issues.
Final Words
After lighting up and losing weight, Kimmel is quite happy with his current condition. He is cautious so as to not fall into the same spiral of being unhealthy. “I definitely feel pressure to keep slim. I don’t want to be the guy who lost weight and gained it all back,” Jimmy said.
